Amid a 55% increase in chikungunya cases this year, the health department is planning to conduct genomic sequencing of samples to identify potential mutations. Uncommon symptoms like hyperpigmentation and neurological issues have surfaced. In response to the significant rise in chikungunya fever cases this year compared to last year, the health department will be sequencing positive samples to detect any genetic changes in the virus. State health officials have clarified that rare symptoms such as hyperpigmentation and neurological problems are not new but are extremely uncommon. These symptoms may occur in chikungunya patients co-infected with dengue or Japanese encephalitis. A rapid action team has been established to investigate the reasons for the increase in chikungunya cases. Guidelines have been issued for the collection and analysis of blood samples from patients showing neurological symptoms, such as paralysis and hyperpigmentation. Severe cases will be sent to the National Institute of Virology and B J Medical College for further examination. Genomic sequencing will be conducted to identify any mutations and determine if other neurotropic viruses are present in chikungunya patients."We will start sequencing once we receive sufficient samples, particularly from ICU patients or those with severe symptoms," said the doctor. Private sector hospital physicians in the city reported a significant rise in chikungunya cases this year, with some patients requiring hospitalization to manage their prolonged high fever and neurological issues. Children have also been affected, such as an eight-month-old boy who was hospitalized at SRCC Children's Hospital in Haji Ali in early August. At Surya Children's Hospital in Santa Cruz, pediatrician Dr. Bhupendra Avasthi noted that children born to chikungunya-positive mothers may exhibit hyperpigmentation, which is a known symptom of the disease.
